Undergoung Utilities and their Standard Colors

Underground utilities can easily be identified today. However, a long time ago, it was difficult to identify these utility lines and so when people try to dig there were many risks involved. Although not completely eliminated, risks today have been reduced. In order to prevent harm, it is important to know or identify these utility lines if your need to dig the ground. The OSHA requires that utilities underground first be located before digging through a piece of land. It is to prevent disaster. Fatal injuries can happen if underground utility lines are struck. It can also interrupt services in your area where the line is located. People can call 811 to prevent these incidents, before they proceed with digging their property. When the number is called, you can let the utility companies come out and mark their respective lines.

Marking lines may lessen the risks but there are time when accidents still happen. The reality is that there is an incident almost every 6 minutes where utility line are struck. Traffic lights, wastewater pipes, telecommunication lines, etc. are affected when lines are struck. This is then something that affects public health and safety.

GPR or Ground Penetrating Radar is used by companies to locate their utility lines. This has made it easier to locate utility lies underground and other important things. However, for the ordinary homeowner, it is enough to simply call 811 to be able to let companies located their lines.

It is easier to identify underground utility lines today because they now use different colors for each utility. Here are the colors used for different utilities.

If you see white lines, then these are proposed excavation sites. It locates areas that will be excavated in the near future.

Red lines are used to mark electric power lines, cable, conduit, and lighting cable. The color red is associated with fire and danger so it is just appropriate to use it for electrical works.

If you see yellow lines, then they are lines for gas, oil, steam, petroleum, and gaseous materials. The bright color yellow is used to be a warning sign since a natural gas leak can create a potentially disastrous situation.

Orange lines are used for communication, alarm, signal lines, cable or conduit. If you see blue lines then these are lines for potable water. Reclaimed water, irrigation, and slurry lines used purple lines. Green lines are used for sewer and drain lines. Hitting this line can truly derail any project for a long period of time.
